Another Wonderful Book by Pike
This is another book in the vampire series. I find them all very fascinating as they pull together a wonderful story of a woman who becomes a vampire and spends the rest of her eternal life searching for her maker, as well as meeting those people of the past along the way. These are books that you can't put down. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants something exceptional to read.

Couldnt be better ! ! !
WOW, this book is just as good (if not better) than the other five and the ending is brilliant and sad (weep). I think that its brilliant that in a way the ending is the beginning. Its full of love, betrayal, suprise, and sadness and it really keeps you on the edge. I think the best part is that the charchter of Sita is so realistic that when the book comes to the end you have a hard time coping with it, but its what she wanted so what can I say! well I'll leave it there but if you havent read the last vampire saga then you have to read it ! If anyone wants to chat with me about the saga or anything you can e-mail me at zell_da_bomb@otmail.com. This book is a credit to Pike and Its the best book I ever read. =p

One of the Best from one of the Best!
This is perhaps The best in the six book saga of The Last Vampire. I loved this book a lot! (Especially the ending!). It is fantastic. Keeps you on your toes, and full of suspense (not so much that you freak out or anything... ^_^). The story itself is very sweet, and a little bloody. Full of betrayel, and love. Lessons on life we would rather not learn, and much, much more! However, it is highly suggested you read the other five books first, otherwise you might just be a little lost. (much emphisis on the LOST)^0^ Christopher really oudid himself on this one!!!

The family of John Pike of Newbury, Massachusetts (some descendants), 1635-1995
Published in Unknown Binding by PENOBSCOT PRESS ()
Author: Allen Raymond Pike
Average review score:

Excellent book on a Pike family and relatives.
In 1635, at the age of 62, John Pike embarked from Southampton, England to Suffolk, Massachusetts with two grown sons and three daughters. This book looks at their descendants who, after 14 generations, have spread through the United States from the shores of New England to the Gulf Coast and to the Pacific Ocean, covering over 350 years. Families are organized and presented within generations. Brief family histories and individual biographies add greatly to the well-presented family group and personal information. The author's personal insights and explanations increase the book's value and understanding. The index includes some 14,000 names. (Genealogical Helper, May-June 1997, p.198)

Definitive work for all Pikes to trace their geneology
The ansestors of John Pike of Newbury, Massachusetts owe a debt of gratitude to Allen R. Pike for the substance, content and joy contained in his book. He strikes out from the first ship's manifests, journals, wills, deeds and letters of John and his family upon their arrival and generation by generation builds upon the family story and connection.

Included in this line are: Major Robert Pike, whose force of personality and logical defenses finally put an end to the public madness known as the Salem witch trials; General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, known for his exploration of the southern reaches of the Louisana Purchase lands at the same time that Lewis and Clark explored the north; he who was to discover Pike's Peak in Colorado, the mountain top that provided the inspiration for the song "America" and which provided the early settlers traveling east with a beacon and a slogan "Pike's Peak or Bust"; or there was General Albert Pike, commander in the Confederate army, who resigned his commission rather than carry out an order to enlist the Indians to attack the Union army and he who later became the most celebrated Freemason and whose statue stands at the corner of Third and Indiana Streets in Washington DC.

Family members and historians seeking to know and understand the impact of an early American family on the shaping of the country will find many samples in the stories of the men and women of this family. While not a narrative per se, tracing the lines from generation to generation gives a great account of the forces at work and the personalities.

Decendants should take to heart the importance of keeping a record of the accomplishments and notable accounts of their family members for archive and future studies of the family heritage.

Marshall Pike, Acting Sec.-Treas., Pike Family Association of America

Excellent detail on Pike and allied lines.
Very well written and documented history of the Pike lines stemming from John Pike who came over from England in 1635 and settled in MA. His lines spread mainly through New England and the book covers twelve generations. A genealogy of this type will be of interest primarily to those who have the Pike name in their ancestry. However, if one is starting to prepare a published account of a member of their line, this is an excellent source for study and how to organize material. It is a large book, some 875 pages. However,it is well done and attractive. There is a significant amount of information here that may prove to be of immense value. Different typing fonts are used very effectively in high lighting names, dates, and lines of decent. In many cases, short biographies of numerous individuals are given. This adds an unusual slant and offers an insite into the lives of the people discussed. Wills are reproduced where available and in several cases weddings are described. An appendix is attached and gives family lines for allied groups which tie into the Pike line. Examples are the Carr, French, Bradbury, Plummer, Stockman, Cutts, Worth, Bloomfield, True, Fletcher and Coolidge families. An excellent bibliography is given along with a complete every-name index. Mr. Allen R. Pike is to commended for assembling this material into a usuable and interesting form. It had to be a monumental effort and the result is an exceptional addition to the family history library.

Fish or Cut Bait: A Pike's Marina Novel
Published in Paperback by Writers Showcase Press (May, 2002)
Author: Dave Bednar
Average review score:

Bednar is two-for-two with his suspenseful mystery novels!
Dave Bednar did it again! Fish or Cut Bait is just as suspenseful and entertaining as his first novel, Landlocked Sailors, and I was in anticipation of "who dunnit" until the last page! Fish or Cut Bait gripped my attention and I really enjoyed the fast-moving plot, unpredictability and entertaining character development that resonated throughout the novel. After the first few chapters, I felt so well-acquainted with the characters that I could picture them hanging out at Rum Runners, their favorite bar on the Lake Erie Bay. Whether you've visited Erie, PA or not, you'll love the Pike's Marina setting on the shores of Lake Erie. Between Jack, Teague, Beth and Gina, these are characters that you can truly relate to -- with their quirky personality traits, entertaining jargon and humorous quips that will make you laugh out loud. My favorite character is Gina Cachinni -- in my opinion, Bednar's best creation yet. You've turned me into a mystery reader Dave! Bednar's style is creative, fun and clever. Make's me ask the question . . . When's the next book due?

Midwest Book Review - another winner from Dave Bednar
This second in Dave Bednar's Pike's Marina series is a winner! He reprised the characters from Landlocked Sailors, much to my delight, and added a few new wrinkles to keep his readers hooked. And like his first book, the author's writing style is crisp and stylish.

Fish or Cut Bait begins a year from where Landlocked Sailors left off. Thomas Teague is back, still admiring Beth Osgood from a safe distance. Detachment from desire is more difficult this time around since Beth is now the first mate on his fishing boat, The Ancient Mariner. Beth has made Teague her main goal in life and makes it clear, in thought if not in actions, that one way or another she will hook her silent friend. Their rakehell pal, Jack Crevalle, is still wearing oddly decorated boxers everywhere he goes and bedding brunettes on his boat, the Seadawg. Teague's father - the aging, crafty WW 2 hero - has now joined ranks and is part owner of Pike's Marina. It's a draw as to which Pike's owner is the most curmudgeonly and canny - Teague's father or Beth's. All in all, they make a fine mix of characters that play off each other realistically. The Erie PA locales are described so realistically that I could see, feel, and smell the fog and air blown in across the lake.

This book begins with mysterious happenings on Lake Erie. On a fog enshrouded day, a boat is lost and finally towed in by the Coast Guard, minus passengers. Jack Crevalle is troubled by the situation As the Pike's Marina friends look on, hoping for word of survivors, Gina Cachinni appears to them from the fog and sends Jack's carefree life into a tailspin. Gina is the original brunette, Jack's first and only serious love, the one who broke their engagement to marry another, much richer man. To Jack, Gina represents a crack in time, a crack in his soul, a loss from which he never quite recovered.

All passengers aboard the foundered boat, the C-Dog, are lost and turn up dead not long after. Thomas and Ray Teague's suspicious military minds kick in at the obvious similarity between C-Dog and SeaDawg and the thought occurs that Jack may have been the target. Thomas, in particular, fears Gina may not be the sweet devoted long lost lover she pretends.

Gina quickly resumes her old relationship with an unusually reluctant Jack, while flirting with every male around, much to Beth's dismay. The petite and pretty Gina has big plans for Thomas Teague. She'll need accomplished heroes like Thomas and her ever-reliable Jack when the murderous Marvin Gardens aka Biggie Big comes in search of her! Her checquered past is rapidly zeroing in on Pike's Marina, and she knows it.

It's a heart pounder, with Thomas calling in old favors from his military contacts, and coming up against a killer twice his size. Jack also takes part in the battle, in his own inimitable style, as the friends from Pike's Marina work together to survive this latest plot to do them in.

Fish or Cut Bait is a great read, as was its predecessor. Dave Bednar's novels have realistic, wry and witty dialog, sometimes prickly humor, and characters who bring the story home in spades. I hope to see a third in this Pike's Marina series soon. One question begs an answer, Mr. Bednar. Will the more-than-patient Beth Osgood EVER get her man?

Want A Different Kind of Mystery?Have I Got One for You!
Try Fish or Cut Bait if you're looking for a different kind of mystery. A mystery concerning fishermen may not sound interesting to you. But take a good look at this one. It's definitely worth your time.
Jack Crevalle is a fun loving man who takes charters of fishermen on Lake Erie. A former officer with the Coast Guard, Jack keeps his boat the Sea Dawg in a slip in Pike's Marina, Erie, Pennsylvania.
One foggy morning a boat rescues two men found floating on Lake Erie, no ship in sight. Later five bodies are washed ashore, four men and a woman, each body bears gunshot wounds.
The same morning Gina,a sexy brunette who jilted Jack for another man appears out of the fog. Her ex-husband is in jail for drug dealing and Gina's running for her life.
With each page the tension mounts. There are several scenes where you'll feel breathless!
Fish or Cut Bait is full of twists and turns and surprises! I look forward to reading more of Bednaar's titles!

A Stretch on the River
Published in Paperback by Minnesota Historical Society (October, 1987)
Authors: Richard Pike Bissell and Martha Bray
Average review score:

I studied some chapters from this book in Lit class.
The chapters were about the lock at Keokuk, republished in the anthology on American Lit that we used, a few years after the book came out. I agree, more profs should teach Bissell. Bissell also wrote the Rivers of America volume on the Mononagehela, based on his piloting experience there, and the book (7-1/2 Cents) which became the musical Pajama Game. This was based on his experiences running his family's garment factory. Then he wrote Say Darling about how the musical was made. ASOTR was a hit when first published in July 1950--it was reprinted twice in July and again in October.

The most accurate depiction of life on a towboat written
Bissell's story of life on a towboat is a perfect complement to Twain's "Life on the Mississippi". I have spent almost thirty years working on the River and if I had to recommend only one book that explains what the people and towboat life is like, this would be the book. His depiction of river characters and their dialog is perfect. It may be more a reflection of the type of people who go to the river to work, you can draw a line from Mike Fink stories through Twain and Bissell and find those same people riding boats on the rivers of America's backyards. I believe I read somewhere that Mickey Spillane said Richard Bissells' writing showed him what dialog in a book should be. Bissell's other river book, "High Water", should not be missed. Both books should be available through the Minnesota Historical Society Press.

A wonderful book by a lost treasure of American literature
I am one of the few people out there who not only know who Richard Bissell is, I'm trying to collect all of his books! I actually bought a first edition of ASotR once, thinking it was the only edition, started to read it just long enough to realize how great it was, and lost it. I've read every novel and most of the nonfiction Bissell wrote, and this was going to be the last 'new' (to me, anyway) thing I read by him. I'd read about it plenty of times in glowing blurbs on the back of his other novels.

Now, I have to find another one. Do you have any idea where I could find a copy of either the paperback reissue or the original hardback edition? Help a man on his quest!

By the way, if you like Bissell, you should probably try reading Charles Portis, who may be even better.

50 Creative Training Closers : Innovative Ways to End Your Training with IMPACT!
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer (June, 1998)
Authors: Bob Pike and Lynn Solem
Average review score:

Quick & Fun
This book offers very easy to implement closers that can not only be quick and fun, but of course do what closers should do - reinforce learning. Some are certainly just for fun and when there is brain overload, those also have their benefit. As most of Pike's books, this is certainly a good one to have in your library.

Spectacular Endings
This is the most valuable book in my training library. It offers memorable and positive closures for any training. I recently used Name Tag Closure for a weekend long training. The participants loved it! As an added bonus, they told me it made a great icebreaker at the beginning of the training. This activity help them remain focused as they helped each other "find" the answer to their questions. It also worked as a great review at the end of a very long training.

Improves Retention of Trained Material
Lynn Solem and Bob Pike teamed up to present 50 of the best closers they found and used in their Creative Training Techniques Workshops. Trainers looking for ways to end their sessions on a high note will find lots of opportunity lurking between the covers of this book.

Each activity is coded for its use in one or more of four categories: Review Content; Action Planning; Celebration; Motivation. The instructions for each activity are clearly laid out, listing the activity's Source, Objective, Class Length, Appropriate Audience, Group Size, Amount of Time to allow for the activity, Equipment required, and the activity Process.

I have used nearly half of these closers at one time or another, and each one has hit its mark--even when I have been afraid the activity was going south for a few minutes! The A to Z review is one of my favourites for coming back to a group after a lunch or evening break. Colored Dots is a splendid technique for giving the participants a chance to commit to using the learning points on the job. Consulting Envelopes works well for both review and real-world problem-solving, and after trying the Geometric Close about four weeks ago I cannot imagine why I did not use it earlier. Trainers looking for creative ways to have participants reviewing material--enthusiastically--will find this book a useful tool.

Faith in a Mustard Seed
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica (March, 2002)
Author: Angela Pike
Average review score:

Mustard Seeds Musing
This book shows us the truth that people are the same everywhere. Far removed from big-city crime and suburban "keeping up with the Joneses" this story, set in Appalachian West Virginia, wonderfully combines criminal hatreds with family and neighbor joys and friendships, but also dark jealousies. Little Birch and Sutton are real towns with real people and the full gamut of human experiences. This story is a sobering notice that the "country" and the "slow-paced life" are illusions, only fancies that people who have never had a chance to experience true little- town life carry in their imaginations. Mrs. Pike has done a wonderful job in character description and story development. The story line is fast-paced and exciting. I recommend this book for an excellent, enjoyable reading experience.

I can imagine myself as the main character.
This book had me from the beginning! The vivid imagery enables you to fully immerse yourself in the story.

I love the twists and turns that make you back up and reread every now and then.

Don't miss this one!

Faith in a Mustard seed - excellent read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it is not the type of fiction I usually read.

Well written and suspenseful with detailed character development. Kept me involved and absorbed from the first to the last page.

Excellent reading, has all the makings of a television mini-series!

Survive the Shadow Stalker: A Poetic Journey Through Abuse
Published in Hardcover by 1stBooks Library (October, 2002)
Author: Bonnie Pike
Average review score:

Abuse survivors no longer need to be misunderstood
Finally, someone who knows how difficult the road can be
Survive The Shadow Stalker; A Poetic Journey Through Abuse, takes the reader along the path abuse victims of all types and ages must travel. As an abuse survivor, I finally no longer feel alone or quite so misunderstood. This writer lets you feel the pain, the sorrow, the healing and the hope in the space of one single book.

Nice work, Bonnie.
I had the pleasure of sharing a philosophy class with Ms. Pike for the better part of a semester. She is an extremely intuitive and thoughtful person. Her life experiences are imminent in her gaze. No one better could have written this book. She is a valuable resource to any community, be it a scholastic one or to the literature community. The author makes the book, and Bonnie, you've made it.

Wonderful!!!
I have read this book and feel that this is a must read for survivors of abuse everywhere. This book shows all of us that we are NOT alone when it comes to any form of abuse. This book is also wonderful for getting the word out there that this abuse is very real, and it's time for people to face it head on in order to put an end to it. Too many people just want to turn their heads and pretend that it's not happening. Reality hurts, but it doesn't help others or yourself by ignoring it.

On another note, if you are a college student like myself than this book would be wonderful to use when doing a paper on abuse.
